Contemporary etching depicting a so-called Hepp-Hepp Riot against Jews in Frankfurt. This was one of the many anti-Semitic riots that took place in Germany in 1819 amidst a climate of anti-Semitism fuelled by various anti-Jewish publications. Participants in these riots rallied to the cry, "Hepp Hepp", which may have been an acronym for "Hierosolyma est perdita", meaning "Jerusalem is lost".
