The death of Mossad spy Yael Mann: the mastermind of the Verdun 1973 crime

Israel announced the death of the Israeli Mossad spy, Yael Man, last Saturday, whose true identity is still kept secret, at the age of 85. She played an important role in the assassination of three leaders of the Palestine Liberation Organization, in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, in 1973: The spokesman for the “Fatah” movement, Kamal Nasser, and the commander of “Fatah” operations, Muhammad al-Najjar (Abu Yousef), and the person responsible for activating cells in Palestine, Kamal Adwan.

A spy in Beirut

Yael was born in Canada in 1936 and immigrated to Israel in 1968. A few years later, in 1971, she was recruited to work in the Mossad. Soon after her training in Israel ended, Yael received her first assignment. She was assigned to mingle with the locals in Brussels, the capital of Belgium. She had an apartment, a job and a good social life. Three months after arriving in Brussels, she embarked on her first mission, when she was to gather intelligence in Beirut.

Yael describes her mission in Lebanon by saying, “They told me it was part of a larger effort against terrorist cells. It was after the Munich Olympics massacre, during a period full of terror. When I entered Beirut there was no action plan, but I also did not ask questions about anything unless it was So it has something to do with my work. I focused on what I had to do, and I looked for a story that would allow me to stay in Beirut for a longer period of time, so that I could go in and leave.”

Yael was sent to live in Lebanon with the code name “Nielsen” as a documentary filmmaker, and announced that she was preparing a documentary on Lebanon and Syria for a British production company. Since she did not understand anything about the nature of this work, she traveled to Israel to undergo a short course in writing, which took place at the home of the novelist Shabtai Tefth, who was a close friend of the famous Mossad man, Mike Harari.

“Fountain of Youth”

And in a hidden way, I began preparing for the operation “Fountain of Youth” launched by the Mossad to assassinate the three leaders of the “Fatah” movement in the Verdun neighborhood. In the Lebanese capital, she got acquainted with several Lebanese personalities and chose a house close to the targeted personalities, and was able to move freely in the area and took large quantities of photos, which she sent to the Mossad.

On the night of April 10, 1973, Israeli soldiers arrived in the Lebanese capital, Beirut, disguised as women. Among them was Ehud Barak, who commanded the General Staff company, while another group attempted to blow up the headquarters of the Democratic Front in the Fakhani neighborhood. The operation was carried out with the assistance of an Israeli intelligence team called “Gidon”, who then moved and his head to Tripoli to plan a similar operation.

During the operation, the “Gideon” unit blew up the headquarters of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, and two Israeli soldiers were killed. The force that attacked the homes of Palestinian leaders disguised itself as “Hippies”, before carrying out the operation.

secret mission

The Israeli press describes Yael as a beautiful young woman and one of the most daring agents of the Mossad. The Israeli spy spoke at length a few years ago about her experience in Lebanon, in an interview with the Yedioth Ahronoth newspaper, which had not been published in Arabic until the date of this writing. She recalls that on April 9, 1973, at 7 pm, she met an Israeli man named Eviatar for dinner. They sat in an elegant restaurant in the “Phenicia” hotel, drank wine, enjoyed the food and chatted. None of those who saw them would have thought that they were in the “Caesarea” Mossad unit, the executive arm of the secret agency, or that Yael was meeting her boyfriend on a secret mission.

Two months before the operation, Yael rented an apartment opposite the residence of the targeted figures. She watched them for a while from her windows. On April 10, she conveyed a message to Eviatar: “They are at home today, all three.”

According to the Israeli writer Efrat Maas, Yael did not know at the time, while she was having dinner, that the Israeli forces had already gone out to sea, waiting for approval to come to the Beirut shore. She did not know that her statement about the return of the three men to the house would launch Operation Fountain of Youth, which is considered one of the most daring operations in the history of the Israeli security services.

“I got to the apartment around 9pm,” Yael says of that night. “I checked, as I always did, if anyone had come in while I was away, and then I went to the window to see if the Three Targets were still in their apartments, and then I was gone.” to bed”.

She added, “It was only a while until I heard gunfire, I crawled on the ground and looked outside to see what was happening. There were three big cars parked in the street. There were gunshots, screaming, and the lights went on in the three apartments. It all happened so fast, all of a sudden. I heard the phrase “come here” in Hebrew. When I heard Hebrew in the heart of Beirut, I knew that the operation had begun, and linked what was happening with the information I gave Eviatar a few hours earlier.”

After the operation

Yael stayed in Beirut for five days after the operation. She was alone, in a hostile environment, while the local authorities were on a hunt to find anyone responsible for helping the Israelis. She describes this by saying, “I knew nothing about the others, because I was instructed to cut ties with the headquarters so as not to risk my safety. I was then asked to leave my apartment at once, to go to a hotel, and to tell the owner that I was too afraid to stay in the neighbourhood, and that I should travel to Belgium after a week for vacation. But when I approached the owner, with whom I have a good relationship, and told him that I was afraid and wanted to leave, he looked terrified and told me it was a terrible idea, that every sudden departure would raise doubts. Then he offered me to live with him and his family until things calmed down.He brought someone his friends, whom I know, to persuade me. He repeated that leaving would make me suspicious, because they were looking for Americans.”

“I was in trouble, and decided to act on the advice of my Lebanese friends. Zvi Zamir, the former head of the Mossad, told me later that I was the only agent who had ever ignored his instructions, and added with his typical smile: But the result was good.”

As soon as things calmed down, she told Yael the owner of the apartment again of her intention to travel to Belgium, and he insisted that he take her to the airport so that he could protect her. And here she says, “Besides the great relief I felt, I thought of the nice owner, and my Lebanese friends who protected me. But what if they knew the truth about me? Today, with everything exposed, I think of the nice people who live in Al-Waleed Street in Lebanon, and how they would accept My truth is, they might be angry.”

Remembering Ehud Barak

Following the news of her death, former Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who led Operation Fountain of Youth, praised Yael, saying: “She is a walking legend of courage, calmness and professionalism. She provided us with the information needed to eliminate terrorist leaders in Beirut. She was there while we were approaching to make sure.” that they were already in their apartments and stayed in the area so as not to leave a trace. She has endless courage. I hope her memory is blessed.”

It is reported that the editor of intelligence affairs, Ronen Bergman, revealed in 2019, that the Israeli agent contributed to providing private information and photos, while the Mossad created a private photo album for each of the targeted leaders. It also collected information about a Lebanese police station in the neighborhood, and about luxury American-made car rental companies in Beirut that the Mossad needed to transport its elements from the Beirut coast to Verdun Street. He also indicated that guards in the neighborhood interrogated her while she was returning from a vegetable store, and she informed them that she was staying in a nearby apartment, and they soon left her.
